About San Miniato

San Miniato is a town in the province of Pisa, which itself is in the central region of Tuscany. The town has the contrast of an urban city center and a rural hinterland, which have in common the culture of food that has deep roots in the town's ancient agricultural economy.

The origins of San Miniato go back to Etruscan and Roman times, as can be seen by the remains of those civilizations, such as the ruins of the necropolis of Fontevivo, tables, marble statues and bronze works found through excavations. Once a military post named Quarto, it then became a village where a church, consecrated to the martyr Saint Miniato, gave it its current name.

Today, San Miniato hosts its main event “the White Truffle Fair” every November. For the rest of the year, the town is notable for the church of San Domenico that was constructed in the 14th century, yet never finished; the Diocesan Museum, which consists of an art gallery for Italian artists; the Town of Frederick, which was reconstructed after being bombed during World War II; and the Convent of San Francesco, which was allegedly founded by Saint Francis of Assisi himself.
