About the city

Gallipoli is a southern Italian town in the province of Lecce, Apulia. Gallipoli derives its name from the Greek Kallipolis, which means "Beautiful City". In 2014, it had a population of 31,862.

The town of Gallipoli is located by the Ionian Sea, on the west coast of the Salentina Peninsula. The town is divided into two parts, the modern and the old city. The new town includes all the newest buildings including a skyscraper. The old town is located on a limestone island, linked to the mainland by a bridge built in the 16th century.

About the twinning agreement

In December 2008, Mr. Victor Batarseh, the then mayor of Bethlehem, visited Gallipoli to sign the twinning agreement between Bethlehem and Gallipoli. This agreement aimed particularly to support and defend peace, to carry out common cultural plans, to reinforce knowledge and friendship between people of both countries, to allow greater information and comprehension of different cultures, to promote cultural and tourist development and to start an ongoing relationship of collaboration.
