About the city
Castelnuovo di Porto is a city in the Italian region of Latium, located about 25 kilometres north of Rome. Castelnuovo is a municipality with a strong cultural identity that was formed and got its importance during the medieval era, dating back to pre-roman times. The city is placed inside the regional park of Veio, a venue rich in archaeological and natural sites.
About the twinning agreement
A twinning agreement was signed in November 2017 between Adv. Anton Salman, Mayor of Bethlehem, and Mr. Riccardo Travaglini, Mayor of Castelnuovo di Porto. With this agreement, the two municipalities began to work on an action plan to promote cultural resources and sustainable tourism. This will be achieved through the mapping of existing resources; an exchange that will produce a publication about the cultural heritage of the two cities; an exchange of students between the University of Bethlehem and the University of Rome, during which the students will do a research in the fields of protection and promotion of the tangible and intangible patrimony of the two cities.
Furthermore, the two cities will develop a smartphone application for tourists and pilgrims visiting Bethlehem. The two municipalities started a photo contest project, as for youth to be more aware about the resources of their territories. The great challenge will be to develop a common project to be part of the “Bethlehem Capital of Arab Culture 2020”.
